Half the doors
print nothing.

9 of the city’s plates hold fewer than five confirmed rooms. The obvious reading is that we have not looked hard enough, so on 2026-09-03 we read every page the queue had for them, twice over where the first pass came up short. They are not thin because nobody looked. They are thin because the rooms in them do not print an hour anywhere a person can check.

41 of the 84 pages read that night carried no cheap hour at all. Not a wrong price, not a stale one. Nothing to check.

Every bar, pub and restaurant on OpenStreetMap with a website is a phone book of 1,927 candidate doors across the city’s plates, and 579 of their pages print enough happy-hour language to be worth a person’s reading. That is the record’s own queue, and 9 of the 84 pages read that night had a real, dated offer to give. This is a lower bound, not a census: OpenStreetMap’s website tags are added by hand and are thinner where fewer people map, which is not evenly distributed across the city either. Never a claim that a neighborhood has nothing to give. Know a printed cheap hour in one of these? Send the source URL.

The phone book itself is lopsided

Every plate's candidate count, from the same OSM reading, sorted by size. River North alone holds 17% of the whole city's candidate pages. Before anyone reads a single one, the phone book itself already looks like two different cities.

Lit rows are the 9 plates below five confirmed rooms, carried into the next panel.

What panning it found, plate by plate

For each thin plate: candidate pages with a website, how many print enough to be worth reading, and how many of those became a confirmed room. The gap between the first two numbers and the third is not unread pages. Every one of them was read on 2026-09-03.

  1. Humboldt Park 1 of 0 of 8
  2. Bridgeport 1 of 2 of 17
  3. Portage Park 1 of 3 of 21
  4. Chinatown 2 of 11 of 42
  5. Rogers Park 3 of 6 of 29
  6. Hyde Park 3 of 16 of 34
  7. Lincoln Square 3 of 11 of 48
  8. South Loop 4 of 9 of 42
  9. Edgewater 4 of 15 of 65

Rooms confirmed, of pages worth reading, of candidate pages with a website. Humboldt Park's own candidate count is 8: the phone book itself found almost nothing to read there, on this pass.

Read that night, in the room's own words

41 of 74 refusals that night never got as far as a rule in how a deal earns a light. The room's own page had no special printed on it at all. The rest failed in smaller, specific ways. These are twelve of them, quoted from the reading log.

  1. Chi Cafe

the page prints "No Promotions Available"

  2. No.18 Karaoke

specials shown only as unreadable images, no extractable text or prices

  3. Atmosphere

specials shown only as an unreadable flyer image

  4. Konak Pizza and Grill

a Monday dine-in discount is printed with no time window

  5. Eli Tea Bar

the events page shown is the Birmingham, Michigan location's, not the Chicago room's

  6. Output Lounge & Sports Bar

the specials on file are still dated September 2020

  7. O'Shaughnessy's

the page says "we are updating our specials"

  8. La Malinche Coffee & Tea House

a calendar widget shows placeholder entries reading "Winter," "Spring," nothing real

  9. Marina's Bistro & Rum Bar

the same kind of calendar widget, showing "Closed" for 4 to 6pm

  10. Stussy's Diner

the widget's own placeholder: one slot labeled "Test"

  11. Hiro Izakaya

happy hour prices are printed, with no day or time given anywhere on the site

  12. Smoque BBQ

a Tuesday–Thursday taco kit special, with no time window printed

What this reading is not

Not a claim that these neighborhoods have nothing to offer. A bar without a website, or one whose only printed hours live inside a delivery app, is invisible to a phone book built from tagged websites, and that gap is not evenly distributed across the city either. Not a finished sweep: 56 pages the queue already knows about across these 9 plates are not yet read, and re-running scripts/density.mjs --plates widens the search further. What it is: everything the record could find and read by 2026-09-03, reported exactly, so a thin plate reads as read-and-thin rather than merely dark. See the record's own maintenance log on the desk.
